Beton Tapes 1990-1999 (Hamburg, Haiko Herden + Alexander Pohle)

Geschichte

Haiko Herden aus dem Hamburger Stadtteil Lurup macht bereits seit 1982/83 Musik mit zahlreichen Bands und Projekten (Charles Lindbergh n.e.V., News On Friday, The Unrealizable Wish, The Evasion On Stake, The Black Ribbon, Cruel Vengeance, Anti Trust, Johnny Beton And The Mörtels...) und hat bis 1990 zahlreiche Kassetten aufgenommen und im Freundeskreis unter Namen wie "Black Mass Productions" oder "Leech Production" veröffentlicht. Die "Auflagen" blieben überwiegend im einstelligen Bereich. Ab circa 1986 entstand für die Aktivitäten von Haiko und einigen Schulfreunden der Oberbegriff Neue Luruper Welle, kurz NLW. Durch die Freundschaft mit Alexander Pohle ab 1988 wurde versucht, die Musik in etwas geregeltere Bahnen zu lenken - unter anderem mit dem "Fanclub"-Blatt The Moral Pistol -, was Mitte 1990 darin gipfelte, dass ein Kassetten-Label gegründet werden sollte.

An einem Sommerabend wollte man in der gemeinsamen Stammkneipe Details besprechen, die hatte an dem Abend aber zu und so versorgte man sich mit Dosenbier und fuhr in einen nahegelegnen Park. Aus gebrainstormten Listen mit Namensideen kristallisierte sich bald Beton Tapes als Favorit heraus, was in der Erinnerung vor allem auch mit der Vorliebe für die Berliner Band Einstürzende Neubauten zu tun hatte. Erste Veröffentlichung sollte eine 30minütige Kassette von Haikos Soloprojekt The Evasion On Stake sein, das musikalisch gut in die gerade durch das Zillo-Magazin und Bands wie Das Ich, Love Like Blood, Deine Lakaien und Project Pitchfork aufblühende Darkwave-Szene passte.

Mit selbstproduzierten 4-Spur-Aufnahmen und einfachen technischen und grafischen Mitteln wurde die Kassette im Dezember 1990 fertiggestellt und veröffentlicht. Durch die damals sehr lebendige Kassetten- und Fanzine-Szene wurden schnell zahlreiche Kontakte geknüpft und erste Rezensionen so wie tausende Flyer wurde Beton Tapes schnell im kleinen Rahmen in Deutschland und international bekannt, so dass weit über 100 Kassetten in kurzer Zeit verbreitet werden konnten.

Mit der zweiten Veröffentlichung des Electro-Projektes Umpire, einem weiteren Tape vonThe Evasion On Stake und der ersten Compilation "Beton - Es kommt drauf an, was man daraus macht" war eine gute Grundlage für Beton Tapes gelegt. Bald nahm man auch Kassetten und andere Tonträger von befreundeten Bands und Labels in den Vertrieb auf. Dabei entschlossen Haiko und Alexander sich, die Katalognummern fortlaufend zu vergeben...bei den eigenen Veröffentlichungen mit dem Präfix "BT" (für Beton Tapes) und bei den Fremdveröffentlichungen "BV" (für Beton Vertrieb).

In den folgenden Jahren konnte sich Beton Tapes vor allem mit der Zusammenstellung von Compilation-Tapes einen guten Namen machen, wobei besonders im Darkwave-Bereich auch zahlreiche bekannte Szene-Bands vertreten waren, teilweise mit exklusivem Material...von Love Like Blood und Every New Dead Ghost über Silke Bischoff, Ataraxia,Kirlian Camera, Serpents, The House Of Usher, Sopor Aeternus, Welle:Erdball, The Rorschach Garden, Notstandskomitee und Lore Of Asmoday bis zu Dark Orange, Fortification 55, Ghosting, Misanthrope und Two Witches. Aber auch in allen möglichen anderen Indie-Musikrichtungen von Electro und Industrial über Punk bis Gitarrenpop und sogar Metal erschienen Veröffentlichungen. Einige Tapes wurden bis zu 200x verkauft, was zu der Zeit eine hohe Zahl für eine reine Tape-Veröffentlichung war. Bis 1995 wuchs der Katalog so auf weit über 120 Veröffentlichungen an. Auch Videocassetten und ein "Buch" wurden unter die Leute gebracht.

Aufgrund der fast schon sprichwörtlichen Unfähigkeit zur Selbstvermarktung, aber auch Veränderungen der Lebenssituation und berufliche Zeiteinschränkungen bei Haiko und Alexander schrumpften die Verkaufszahlen kontinuierlich, viel lief zum Ende hin nur noch über den Tausch mit anderen Labels. Andere Aktivitäten wie regelmäßige TV-und Radiosendungen im Offenen Kanal Hamburg, das Fanzine Back Again, das zweite Label Gorkon Recordings mit angeschlossenem Gucky Mailorder, die Mit-Organisation mehrerer kleiner Festivals und viele mehr ließen Beton Tapes immer mehr in den Hintergrund rücken und ab 1996 schlief das Label immer mehr ein. Bis 1999 gab es noch einige Planungen für Veröffentlichungen, die aber nicht mehr umgesetzt wurden.

Auch Haikos eigene Musik ruhte mehrere Jahre, bis er Anfang der 2000er Jahre begann, sein altes Soloprojekt Anti Trust wiederzubeleben. Dies nahmen Haiko und Alexander um Anlass, 2003 ein neues Label zu gründen, das professioneller aufgestellt war und bis 2018 auf CD und Vinyl veröffentlichte: NLW - Musik fuer gute Leute.
Das Fanzine Back Agai war inzwischen ein Online-Zine geworden und unter dem Namen wurde ein Mailorder gegründet, später auch mehrere Sublabels (Schallplatten aus Lurup, Echoplay, Suboptimal Records).

Weiterhin konnten alle 10 Teile der IRRE TAPES-Compilation-Reihe "The Power And The Passion", alle 5 Teile der CAT KILLER-Compilation-Reihe "Keine Einzelgänger"und die "Best of TONSPUR TAPES"-Compilation mit Genehmigung der Labels auf Anfrage kopiert werden, sowie einige Tapes, CDs und Platten, die nur in geringer Menge vorhanden waren.

Schließlich wurde angeboten, zum Selbstkostenpreis Kopien von zahlreichen TV-Shows aus dem Offenen Kanal Hamburg und selbstgedrehten Kurzfilmen zu bestellen. Es gab auch diverse Newsletter gegen Rückporto wie den "Irre Tapes Newsletter", "Artefacted", "Fight Amnesia", "Nizagamah" und den "P.E. Newsletter".
